Richard Hughes Lane

Richard Hughes Lane, 89, of East Bernard, Texas, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013. Richard was born June 28, 1924, in Lamesa, Texas. He grew up in Rosenberg, Texas, where his lifelong love of cars began while working with his father and brother at Lane Motor Co. He joined the United States Navy and served during WWII in San Diego, Calif. He married his high school sweetheart Gloria Fogg Lane of Sugar Land, Texas, on September 4, 1943, and this past September, Gloria and Richard celebrated 70 years of marriage. Richard and Gloria moved to East Bernard In 1953 where he began a long and legendary career selling Chevrolets for Union Motor Company. If you lived in or around Wharton County you bought at least one car from Richard, if not two, three, or four! Richard was preceded in death by his parents James H. and Annie Lane. He is survived by his wife Gloria and his only brother, James B. and wife Geneva Lane of Rosenberg. Richard will live on forever in the hearts of, and will be dearly remembered by his daughters, Patricia Knapp and husband Tom; Vickie Wright and husband Russell; Donna Huestis and husband Charles, as well as his first son-in-law Walter Joe Mangum. He was the consummate "PawPaw" to Lane and Shebra Mangum, Beth Mangum, Valerie Wright and Richard "Alex" Wright; Adam Lane Huestis and Cameron Huestis and his fiancée Tanya Ricardo; as well as great grandchildren Nick, Emily, Taylor and Austin Lane Mangum; and Colten and Ashley Hays and their children Hunter Rae and Drake; and Danielle, Trent and Michael Hays. He is also survived by his nephew Bryan Lane and wife Cindy and niece Deborah Wolbrett and husband Bruce. The family gratefully acknowledges and thanks Lakeasha Kirby, his "adopted daughter" for her devotion and love to Richard and the entire family. The family will revceive visitors on Monday November 25 at the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard from 5-7 pm. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11:30 am at the Methodist Church with reception to follow. Burial followed at 2:30 pm at Davis Greenlawn Cemetery in Rosenberg, Texas. Pallbearers are Richard''s 6 grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers are the good neighbors of more than 50 years in the Schuman Subdivision. Thank you for joining us in honoring Richard, an amazing man who touched all our lives and made us all better people just for knowing and loving him.
