Walter Leon Nail

WALTER LEON NAIL was born July 3, 1917, in rural Panola County, Texas, the son of George Homer and Louella Marshall Nail. Walter spent his early years working on the family farm to help his family following the loss of his father when he was 6 years of age. Walter married Maurine Grafton on March 1, 1937, in Panola County. He was a veteran of the United States Army; a Mason for over 66 years and was employed by Sante Fe Railroad as a locomotive engineer for 37 years. He enjoyed traveling, gardening and was an avid golfer, having won the Bellville Club Championship three times. Walter passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Watercrest Assisted Living in Bryan, Texas, at the age of 95. He is survived by his SONS: Horace L. Nail and his wife, Myrna, of Bryan, and Owen G. Nail and his wife, Janice, of Statham, GA; DAUGHTER-IN-LAW: Anna Nail of Brenham; SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN: Mary Ann Jordan of Brookshire, Amy McWilliams of The Woodlands, Greg Nail of Dunwoody, GA, James Nail of Welborn, Julie Nail Adams of Brenham, Tammy Nail Meyer of Lilburn, GA and Robbie Nail Reinhardt of Bryan; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends in Bellville where he and Maurine lived for 63 years. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 74 years, Maurine, one son, Jerry M. Nail, five sisters, Agnes Nail Reed, Bernice Nail Johnson, Sybil Nail Langford, Grace Nail Bleimeyer and Ann Lou Nail, two brothers, George Howard Nail and Watson Roland Nail, Sr. Walter was the last surviving member of his family. The family would like to extend their "heartfelt thanks" to everyone for their many kind words. Also a "special thanks" to Jerry Bean for keeping Walter informed on all of the Austin County news and James Ray Grafton on the news from Panola County. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M., at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville. Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 A.M. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the charity of their choice.
