Edward Ray Griffin

EDWARD RAY GRIFFIN, 89, longtime Brookshire resident, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012, in a Katy hospital. Ed was born January 25, 1923, in Belton, Bell County, Texas. The son of Joseph Frank and Lillian Anderson Griffin, he grew up in the Bell County area and attended the Belton Schools. He went to work on his father's cotton farm before joining the Merchant Marines and serving during World War II. On June 2, 1945, Ed married Velma Gidley in Temple, Texas. They made their home in Temple where Ed was employed at Southern Pacific Railroad. Later Ed and Velma moved to Brookshire where they were members of the First United Methodist Church. From 1950 - 1965, Ed worked as a rice farmer on J.D. Woods' rice farm. He attended school to earn his real estate broker's license and in 1965 he opened Griffin Real Estate retiring in 2005. An avid outdoorsman, Ed loved fishing and hunting, and training bird dogs. As a young man, he also enjoyed calf roping. Active in community affairs, Ed was a member of the Brookshire Lions Club, the Brookshire Masonic Lodge #1066, AF&AM and the Scottish Rites. He had also served as President of the Brookshire-Katy Drainage District. Ed is survived by his WIFE: Velma Griffin of Brookshire; CHILDREN: Sandra Floyd and her husband, Mike, of Baytown, Betty Root and her husband, Jesse, of San Antonio, Edward Griffin, Jr. of Brookshire, Brenda White and her husband, Doug, of Katy, and Thedie Green, also of Katy; GRANDCHILDREN: Christine Kukolja, Steven Stallknecht, Dawn Carter, Amanda White, Lauren White, Sam Green and Emma Green; GREAT GRANDCHILDREN: Matthew Kukolja, Taylor Stallknecht, Emalie Stallknecht, Jake Carter and Hannah Carter. He is also survived by his SISTERS: Mozelle Williams and Edna Roten; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl and Garland Griffin, and three sisters, Mabel Gerstenberg, Alma Doss and Cora Henderson.
