Winston B. Neely,

June 4, 1924 — August 1, 2012

Winston Brookfield Neely passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at the age of 88. He was born in Bellville on June 4, 1924 to Jubal Allen and Almeida Brookfield Neely and attended Bellville public schools. Winston received his bachelor's degree in 1945 from the University of Texas in Austin and continued his education at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, graduating in May, 1949. After completing his two year internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, Dr. Neely received his commission in the Army, completed his field services officer training and was deployed to Korea where he served in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital as a field surgeon. Upon his return to the States in 1953, he married Annie Sue McCarty, a nurse he had met in Galveston just before going to Philadelphia. The couple settled in Bellville where Dr. Neely began his general medical practice. After the birth of their two children, Winston completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He practiced at Bellville General Hospital as a board certified Internist for the next 40 years. In his spare time, Winston enjoyed RV-ing, taking his family all around the United States, Canada and Mexico. After retiring, he and Sue traveled to Egypt, Europe and Russia, usually accompanied by their friends, the Charpiots. In 1990, he and his brother, Bob, went around the world to Thailand, Nepal and India and then, in 1993, the two brothers boarded a ship to visit Antarctica. His first love, though, was fishing and he enjoyed countless hours with his fishing buddies and his family down at Port O'Connor. As his father before him, Winston became a Boy Scout leader. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 116 in Bellville and saw several Eagle Scouts come out of the program, including his son, Jack. For his service at the district level of the Boy Scouts of America, Winston was awarded the Silver Beaver award - an award presented to Scout volunteers. A community leader, Winston served for many years on the Board of Directors of the original Austin County State Bank and as president of the Bellville Chamber of Commerce. He was also on the board of the Bellville General Hospital and was instrumental in forming the taxing authority that allowed the hospital to remain an active and vital resource for medical services in the county. After retirement, Winston also participated in the Austin County Historical Society. Dr. Neely is survived by his wife, Sue Neely, his son and daughter-in-law Dr. Jack and Karen Neely of Brenham, his daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Mark Ellis of Houston, his four grandchildren, Amy Nabors and husband Clint, Katie Ellis, Lee Ann Broeker and husband, Adam, John Neely, his brother, Dr. Robert Neely and wife, Joy and his two nephews, Dr. Byron Neely and Dr. Warren Neely and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. J.A. and Almeida Neely, his granddaughter, Laura Beth Neely and his great-grandson, James Michael Nabors.
