LARRY JOE VERN was born June 5, 1944, in Del Rio, Texas, to Edward Robert and Cleo Virginia Hartman Vern. He grew up in the Houston area and graduated from Jeff Davis High School. He met Mary Peterek, who worked at the Tasty Treat in Brookshire. They kept in touch by writing letters to each other when Larry was drafted into the United States Army. Larry served in the 25th Infantry Division from March 1967 to March 1968. During his tour, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Three Bronze Service Stars and a Sharpshooter Award. After honorably serving his country, Larry returned to Texas and he and Mary were united in marriage June 6, 1968 in Brookshire, Texas, and made their home in Houston. Working alongside his father Edward, Larry learned everything he could about painting and the construction business. They relocated to Simonton to enjoy the country life. Their son Mark was born in 1969, and was the light of their life. Larry enjoyed fishing, collecting stamps and old newspapers. He treasured the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren. Larry passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011 at his home at the age of 67. He is survived by his SON: Mark Vern and his wife, Amy, of Houston; GRANDCHILDREN: Cody, Britney and Cassidy Vern of Houston; SISTER: Judy Johnson of Houston; and many other nieces, nephews and dear friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Cleo, wife, Mary.
