CONWAY LLOYD WAAK, SR. was born in Bellville, Texas, on January 8, 1931 to William and Emma Grawunder Waak, Jr. He was baptized and confirmed in Bellville. He attended Piney School and Bellville High School. There he enjoyed playing football until graduating in 1948. He met his wife Helen Catherine Landrum at Coshatte Hall, and they were married on June 3, 1950. Conway's life always included farming and ranching. He and his wife, Helen, are also known for having been the proprietors of Waak's Sausage and Meat Market. His traditional German sausage recipe and his market's reputation for choice, fresh cuts of meats provided many tasty meals for Austin County and the surrounding areas. Sandy Oaks Fox Pen and a trailer park have been additional business ventures. He belonged to the Woodmen of the World, the Bellville United Methodist Church, and was trustee of Piney School. Anyone who knew Conway, knew he was an avid hunter, but not with guns. Conway loved hunting with dogs, especially Walker hounds. He knew the "voices" of countless hounds and exactly what they were saying. He developed many friendships while attending numerous field trials and bench shows, not only in Texas, but also in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Conway also loved his family of 5 children, 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and numerous in-laws. He was the welcoming committee at the back door to greet everyone with a smile, a wave, and a big howdy.
