Monroe Ben Mewis

MONROE BEN MEWIS, JR. was called home August 5, 2010. Born October 13, 1928 in Brenham, TX, he was the devoted son of Viola (Koerth) Mewis and Monroe Mewis, Sr. A lifelong Lutheran, Monroe was confirmed at St. John and attended Bellville schools where he was class president in 1946, his senior year. Love of country led him to join the service where he served during the Korean War as a Sergeant First Class in the Army Corps of Engineers. Upon his return, Monroe met the love of his life, Faye Hauck. They married in October 1956. The couple was blessed with two children: Cindy, born in 1957, and Lisa, who came along in 1960. Monroe worked for many years as an operator at Shell Oil Company in the Houston area, but always had a passion for construction. After building the family home in Katy, he went on to start a custom home building business with Faye. They designed and built homes together all around the Houston area while raising their daughters in Shore Acres, TX. Monroe was admired by his colleagues and held a variety of leadership roles within the industry. The couple retired back to Bellville more than twenty years ago and enjoyed time spent with family which has grown to include sons-in-law and four grandchildren. Monroe is survived by his DEVOTED WIFE OF 52 YEARS: Faye Mewis of Bellville; DAUGHTERS: Cindy Smith and her husband, Chuck, of Pasadena, and Lisa Cannon and husband, Dale, of Bellville; and GRANDCHILDREN: Ben Cannon, Ava Cannon, Emily Smith and Amy Smith. Monroe was a friend to all, lived by the words in the Bible. He was a role model for his children and grandchildren in whom he always saw only perfection.
