Bobby “Bob” Ray McGill, 87, of Millheim, Texas passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017 in Bryan, Texas. Bob was born on January 9, 1930 in Smackover, Arkansas the son of Floyd and Minnie (Anders) McGill. He grew up in the Piney Woods of East Texas in the Kilgore and Longview area where he attended school. Bob joined the Army in 1946 and served through 1952, obtaining the rank of Corporal. He served in Germany and in the Philippines where he received the World War II Victory Medal as well as the OCC medal. An avid scholar, Bob obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas and his Masters of Liberal Arts from Southern Methodist University. On June 11, 1976 he married the love of his life Karen Schluens who brought stability to his life. Perhaps, some of the fondest memories he had were of the time he spent with his family in Mount Vernon, Missouri where he owned a cattle ranch. Bob moved back to the Millheim Community in 2004 and Karen followed shortly thereafter returning to the place she grew up. Bob enjoyed raising cattle, hunting, golfing, college football and boxing. He loved politics and history and was very knowledgeable on a variety of subject matters and loved to debate. Although Bob had many different hobbies his absolute favorite was fishing. He is survived by his wife: Karen McGill of Millheim, Texas; sons: Clay McGill and wife, Jennifer of Millheim, Texas, Matt McGill and wife, Janene of Australia; grandchildren: Reagan, Cara, and Brady of Millheim, Texas and Dylan of Australia. He is preceded in death by his parents: Floyd and Minnie McGill; in-laws: Fred and Evelyn Schluens; two brothers and a sister. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held.
