Charles Cox

Charles Millard Cox, 69, of Houston, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019.


Charles was born in Richmond, Virginia on March 18, 1950, to Charles Mabry Cox and Miriam Marston (Goddin) Cox. He was known to say, “I was not born in Texas, but got there as fast as I could.” Charles and Norma Smith were married for seventeen years, at Second Baptist Church. Being an avid golfer, he was on the greens every Saturday. His other passion was for his beloved Astros and knew all the player’s stats.


He graduated from the University of Houston with a Degree in Chemistry, then attended the University of Houston Law School, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Charles had an amazing career as a lawyer, representing such companies as Exxon, winning a patent for the corporation, and other major oil companies. Charles worked with Intellectual Property Rights in Patents, drafting applications and prosecutions, Patent Interference Appeals to the Board of Appeals and appeals to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, trademark, Copyrights and Trade Secret Matters. He defended and prosecuted intellectual property cases in various industries; Energy, Chemical, Manufacturing, Metalocene Catalyst, Plastic Valves, Herbicides, and Pollution Control.


Survivors include his wife Norma Smith-Cox of Houston, niece Christy Luthringer, and nephew Lifford Luthringer, both of Texarkana, Texas.


He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
