GILMORE EUGENE HUEBNER, 95, of Bellville, Texas, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at his home. Gilmore was born on August 24, 1923, in Bellville, Texas, the son of Delmus Hugo and Ella (Brau) Huebner. Gilmore grew up in Bellville and graduated from Bellville High School in 1940. He attended Texas A&M University until he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a B-24 Aircraft Mechanic in the 453rd Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. He was one of the “Greatest Generation” – honoring God, Country, and Family. After the War, he came home and enrolled at Sam Houston State University. He was united in marriage to Katie Mewis on December 31, 1949, at the Bellville United Methodist Church. A true entrepreneur, Gilmore bought a dump truck and front-end loader and began moving and hauling dirt and gravel around Bellville. In 1956, he decided to expand into the Ready-Mix Concrete business and started G.E. Huebner Concrete, Inc. He was still seen driving mixer trucks and dump trucks around town up into his late 80’s. Gilmore never met a stranger and never missed the opportunity to reach out to new residents of Bellville whom he always invited to attend the Methodist Church. You could find him each morning at “Bobby Lange’s” drinking his cup of coffee, or at Brookshire Brothers every evening greeting you in the aisles. If you missed him at those places, you were sure to catch him at garage sales on the weekends (if you got there early enough). If you still didn’t know him, he was the man driving around town with his dog on the hood of his truck. Everyone who knew him has a story to tell and they all portray him for what he was – a good, kind, caring, colorful man. Gilmore enjoyed life to the fullest and was an inspiration to so many. He worked hard to lead a productive life. He had the biggest heart and helped friends whenever and wherever he was needed.Gilmore had a true passion for working outdoors. He loved horticulture and planting trees, especially Live Oaks, which can be found all over Bellville. He was fascinated by mechanics and strived to learn all that he could. For decades, he made his daily trip to The Farm to feed his cows and donkey, calling each animal by the name he had given it. He also loved caring for his numerous cats and dogs over the years. Sunday mornings were his time to shine in the kitchen, as he made hot cakes for his grandkids after sleepovers. Gilmore served on numerous boards at the Methodist Church and seldom missed Church and Sunday School. He served on the Bellville ISD School Board for ten years. He was a member of the Austin County Livestock Association. He was a Boy Scout leader and positively impacted the lives of many young men over the years. He was a proud member of the VFW and American Legion. Gilmore leaves behind a legacy that will be passed down and remembered for many generations to come. He is survived by his loving wife of over 69 years: Katie Mewis Huebner of Bellville; daughter: Susie Eckermann and her husband, Alfred, Jr. “Buck”, of Bellville; sons: Dr. Gene Huebner and his wife, Kathy, of Sugar Land, and Glenn Huebner and his wife, Donna, of Bellville; grandchildren: Garrod, William Justin, Jillian, Elizabeth, Marcy, Tony, Katie, Garrett, Gene Austin; ten great-grandchildren, and numerous dear relatives and friends. Gilmore was preceded in death by his parents, Delmus and Ella Huebner, and by his beloved sister, Maxine Volkman.
