Helen Hildegarde Peters Hopkins, 95, of Monaville, Texas passed away Monday, September 14, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Monaville.
Helen was born December 1, 1924, in Monaville, Waller County, Texas, the middle daughter of Adolph Jacob Peters and Emma Thiel Peters. On December 26, 1926, Helen was baptized into Christ Jesus at St John Lutheran Church, Waller. On April 9, 1939, Helen confirmed the faith of her baptism at St John Lutheran Church. On February 4, 1957, Helen transferred her membership to Christ Lutheran Church, Pattison.
She grew up in Monaville, with her 2 sisters, walking to school and picking cotton with the neighbor girls. Graduating at the top of her class from Monaville High School, Helen later attended the University of Houston. She worked for the Weather Bureau in Galveston and New Orleans, and at Ellington Field where she met Jack Hopkins. Jack and Helen were united in marriage November 8, 1953, by the Rev. A.C. Liefer, at Christ Lutheran Church, Pattison. They made their home in Houston, where they welcomed into the world their first daughter, Susan Elaine on December 11, 1955. Helen’s father passed away December 24, 1955, and the young family chose to move to Monaville to assist Emma Peters with farm life. On July 22, 1957, the family welcomed their second daughter, Jacquelyn Marie.
Helen worked for Aetna Life and Casualty in Houston for 30 years. She was a faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church, serving the Lord and His people in various ways, including as a Sunday School Teacher, membership in and serving as President of the LWML, on the Altar Guild and baking delicious sweets for the annual German Sausage Dinner. She also volunteered with the Brookshire/Pattison United Way and Food Pantry. She loved her flowers, and every Sunday afternoon coffee and dessert at her sister Mable’s home in Monaville.
Helen played a big role in her daughter’s lives, making sandwiches and cupcakes for the band at Hempstead Bobcat football games, helping with 4-H projects and the Monaville 4-H Club, and could often be found reading to children at Royal Early Childhood Center or watching the Royal FFA parade, waiting for the Royal ECC floats to pass by. She was very proud of her Texas Aggie and Texas Tech Red Raider daughters.
Helen loved to travel and went on many trips with Jackie… including attending Mary Kay seminar and national conferences.
Helen was an excellent cook and was known for her German Chocolate cakes. When Susie later took over baking those delicious cakes, people often thought it was her mom’s. Birthdays and holiday gatherings were a special part of the Hopkins’ household, and would include homemade desserts from her cookbook collection.
Helen was received by her gracious Lord Jesus Christ into life eternal on September 14, 2020.
Helen is survived by her daughters Susan Elaine Hopkins and Jacquelyn (Jackie) Marie Hopkins Craver, of Monaville, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Helen was proceeded in death by her parents: Adolph Jacob Peters and Emma Thiel Peters; husband, Jack Hopkins, and sisters: Mabel Mc Knight and Edna Mc Ardle.
