Herlinda Cheek

September 23, 1929 — March 2, 2021

Herlinda Cheek, 91, of Brazos Country, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 2, 2021.

Herlinda was born September 23, 1929, the daughter of Ysidro and Teresa (Alaniz) Tamez.  She grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and Monterrey, Mexico areas.  On February 23, 1958, Herlinda was united in marriage to Ernest Allen Cheek in El Campo, Texas.

In her working years, she was employed as a dental technician.  Herlinda had a unique hobby of creating eggs with intricate houses inside, similar to the ship models inside a bottle.  Herlinda enjoyed the beach and fishing, hated cleaning fish, but could really make tasty fried fish, shrimp and crabs.  That does not include all of the Spanish dishes she could conjure.

Herlinda was not an extravagant lady, loved being a mother, enjoyed good conversations, and was quick to give you a warm smile.  There were so many neighborhood children that would seek her out for refuge, a safe haven.  She had numerous pseudo-adopted children, something that really made her happy.  Early in her marriage, Herlinda enjoyed travelling with Ernest when he was an Over the Road Truck Driver.  It became her passion, and really upset her when she was not allowed by some of Ernest's employers to travel with him.

Herlinda is survived by her six children:  Richard Cheek and his wife, Georgina, of Brazos Country, Theresa Ann Cheek-Villanueva and husband, Manuel, John Allen Cheek, Ernest Allen Cheek, Jr., Melicha Ann Cheek, and Jesse Thomas Cheek; also her brother:  Joventino (Tino) Tamez, his wife, Gloria; sister:  Mary T. Hallberg; thirteen (13) granddaughters; thirteen (13) grandsons; lest we forget, fifteen (15) great-granddaughters; twenty-five (25) great-grandsons; and two (2) great-great granddaughters.

Herlinda is preceded in death by her husband:  Ernest Allen Cheek, Sr.; her parents:  Ysidro and Teresa Tamez; brothers:  Encarnacion, Cecil, Rogelio, Joe, and Paul; and sister:  Ruth "Cuca".
