Our beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Jamie Elick, age 75 passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of Christmas Day to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. How fitting that God would choose to bring Jamie home on his Son’s birthday as he was a man of unwavering faith.
A native of Bellville, Jamie was born on the 13 th of May 1947, the son of Virginia Counts Elick and Jerome John Elick. He graduated from Bellville High School, attended Blinn College on a track scholarship, and went on to attend and graduate from the University of Texas at Austin. While there he was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Shortly thereafter, realizing his passion for the law, he attended the University of Houston Law Center, graduating in 1973.
After practicing law for a number of years, Jamie met and married his loving wife Betsy Sengelmann in 1982 and they were blessed with their two sons Jim and Sam. They had just celebrated their 40 th anniversary of marriage this year. Jamie loved his family dearly and was very proud of his two sons to carry on the family name. He was passionate about the genealogy of his family and was always excited to study and learn new things about his many ancestors.
Jamie’s strong faith sustained him throughout his life. His love of God and servant’s heart have left a forever footprint in the lives of all who were blessed to know him. He led many Bible studies and loved sharing and teaching others about the Bible, always helping them to understand it more clearly.
Jamie truly lived and embodied the values he held dear to his heart: kindness, loyalty, and generosity. Jamie had the biggest heart and always saw the best in people, lifting up everyone, including his clients. He loved helping people, always encouraging them, especially in his law practice. His great love of people manifested anytime he met someone, talking with genuine curiosity about their stories and shared interests. You couldn’t find a more proud person from his hometown of Bellville and Austin County. No one knew more about the history and importance of Austin County than Jamie. When asked where he was from, he would excitedly tell people all about Stephen F. Austin and how he had chosen Austin County as the site of the first colony of Texas.
History was one of his great passions. Most often while traveling, he was more knowledgeable than the tour guides. His love for our Country and the foundation upon which it was built was contagious.
We would not want to forget the love he had for his pet boxer dogs, playing cards and dominoes with his friends, and his Texas Longhorns.
He was a lifetime member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, serving on the Pastoral Council and the choir. He was a past president of the Texas Exes of Austin County, served on the Library Board, was a former director of the Bellville Chamber of Commerce, as well as being a member of the Bellville Historical Society and the Austin County Bar Association while also serving on the board of Lonestar Legal Aid for many years. As involved as he was in our community, he always put his family first in every endeavor.
Jamie is survived by his wife Betsy, his two sons Jim and Sam, his daughter-in-law Amanda, his grandson Maverick, and sister Susan Elick Grube and husband Charles Grube, sister Nancy Elick Basham Woodley and husband, Dr. James B. Woodley, his brother John V. Elick and wife Taunia Thompson Elick, his cousin Jay Rea and wife Anne, his father-in-law Sam S. Sengelmann, and his brother-in-law Bill Sengelmann and wife Pam Wilmore Sengelmann.
