Margie Melton Whorton passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021, in Bellville, Texas at the age of 94. Margie was born on December 20, 1926 in Blooming Grove, Texas (Navarro County) to Ben Buckner Melton and Effie Staggs Melton in Blooming Grove, Texas (Navarro County). She grew up and attended school in Blooming Grove, Texas. Upon graduating from Blooming Grove High School in 1945, she received the Best Athlete Award. On June 26, 1947, Margie married Joe Robert Whorton in Corsicana, Texas, after Joe returned home from his service in World War II. They made their home in Thompsons/Rosenberg area where Joe was employed by Humble Oil Company. In 1963, Humble Oil/Exxon transferred Joe to the Raccoon Bend field and they moved to Bellville. Margie and Joe were active members of First Baptist Church of Bellville. Over the years, Margie served on numerous Church committees, however, her favorite was the Bereavement Committee, where she fixed meals and made wonderful desserts for grieving family members. She had a great fondness for the elderly and would take homemade food to elderly friends in Bellville. Margie was an excellent cook and loved entertaining people in her home... always the generous, ultimate hostess. She was known as “Nannie” by her family. Nannie loved to bring out the “good dishes and crystal” to set her table beautifully for everyone. Margie was an extremely social, personable being and loved people in general, but she especially loved her large family and close friends. She described herself as a “people person” and was always planning the next social event for different occasions. Margie was involved in numerous activities and organizations within the community. As one of the early members of the Austin County Aggie Moms’ Club, Margie was a very proud Aggie mom due to both children and two grandsons, along with numerous relatives, that are Aggie graduates. Margie was an avid antiques collector for many years and then, became an antiques dealer. She worked in the banking industry for many years, retiring from First National Bank in Bellville. In her younger years, she was an excellent seamstress and energetic gardener, spending countless hours working on her plants. Also, she enjoyed shopping, playing dominoes and 42 with friends. Nannie loved attending the grandkids’ school and sports activities while they were growing up. Nannie was the “organizer” for our family and a little hyperactive. She stayed busy and was always involved in something. Margie accomplished all of her attempted endeavors with lightning speed, however, they were done well. Margie is survived by her son, Rick Whorton of Spring; her daughter, Holly and husband, Keith “Butch” Smith of Sugar Land; grandchildren: Michelle Whorton, Ashley Whorton Sanders (Mark), Matthew Smith (Victoria) and Andrew Smith; her great granddaughters: Audrey Sanders and Charlotte Smith; her brother, Jake Melton (Mary Ann); sister-in-law, Nancy Melton Wiseman (Johnny). She is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Effie Melton; her sisters: Helen Farish, Bernice Sanders, and Betty Wilson; and her brother, Doug Melton. A special thank you to all of Margie’s caregivers for their excellent care these last years of her life. Pallbearers are her nephews: Mike Sanders, Larry Farish, Benny Melton, Brett Melton, Bobby Spain, John Spain, and Mike Spain. Margie will be buried in the Dresden Cemetery which her great grandfather, Ethan Melton, helped to establish in 1847. He came to Texas around 1838 to settle his brother’s estate, after news reached him that his brother had died in the battle of the Alamo. Ethan was one of the first settlers in the area during the Republic of Texas time period and was instrumental in the creation of Navarro County, becoming the first county treasurer and postmaster. Margie was very proud of her family heritage and her Texas roots. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to either: Dresden Cemetery Association P.O.
