Michael Gene Welch

November 6, 1953 — January 27, 2018

Michael  Gene Welch, better known as Mr. Mike or Pastor Mike, 64, was welcomed into the arms of his savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 27, 2018, in Bellville, Texas. Mike was born in Oakdale, Louisiana to Vernon Gene, and Marilyn (Harper) Welch on November 6, 1953. He graduated from Somerville High School, Class of ’72 and attended the University of Houston, where he majored in Football, Basketball  and Music. Little did he know he would receive a degree in Helping Others. Mike’s first love was music. Actually his first love was his Savior Jesus Christ and being blessed with a talent for music, Mike’s second first love proved to be the stepping stone to his ministry in the Sealy area. A big man, with a heart that was bigger than him, he served his Lord everyday and in every way. He brought laughter, joy and peace to all that would come in contact with him. His ministry included coaching in the Little League in Sealy and assisting in coaching other sports. He was the Youth Pastor at The Shepherd Way Church in Sealy where he ministered to hundreds of children in Sealy and the surrounding area. He also was a Mentor to the Sealy High School Coaching Staff. But Mike’s life was truly fulfilled by his music. He led the Worship and Praise Group at The Shepherd Way Church, and had a fantastic way of opening up the Sunday service and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill the Sanctuary. His choice of music and the songs he wrote could move an entire congregation to their feet, clapping and praising the Lord. Big Mike, Mr. Mike or Pastor Mike, however you remember him, always put Jesus Christ first and allowed Jesus Christ to provide for his family and all of his needs. For a big man, his voice was soft, and his words where kind. Never too busy to stop and visit, or lend a helping hand. He is survived by his wife Stacie (Lalonde) Welch, whom he married on May 8, 1999 in San Felipe, Texas at the home of her parents. This union produced a son, Beau Welch. Mike is also survived by two daughters; Meagan Scanlon and her husband Kelly of Lakeway, Texas; Misty Wolf and her husband Chris of La Pine, Oregon, and a son James Michael Welch of Dallas. Grandchildren; Brenden Wolf, Cortney Wolf, Savannah Scanlon and Rilee Scanlon. He is also survived by his mother, Marilyn Welch of Somerville; sister, Wendy Magnuson of Somerville and two brothers; Bob Welch and his wife Mindy of League City and Charles Welch of Somerville. Numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
