Mona Sharon (Massey) Mullen, 76, of Katy, Texas, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017, in Katy. Sharon was born March 4, 1941, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The daughter of John and Lillie Edith (Batdorf) Massey, she grew up and attended school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She graduated from Capitol Hill High School, where she was editor of the school newspaper and class Valedictorian. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma where she earned her Bachelor of English degree.On May 30, 1964 she married Carl Mullen in Oklahoma City. She then lived on the east coast and west coast and traveled with Carl for five years during his US Navy career, including a wonderful period following him at several European ports (of which she often spoke). They then made their home in Oklahoma City, where they raised their three sons. Sharon was especially blessed in later life when she and Carl moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Katy, Texas in 2000 and got to be near the grandkids for 14 wonderful years. Sharon survived a bout with breast cancer in 2013 with the help of wonderful staff at MD Anderson. Sharon and Carl have been members of Second Baptist Church in Katy since moving to that city. Throughout her life, Sharon always found great joy in working with children. An English teacher, Sharon taught school in Oklahoma, Florida and Virginia. She also served as the Director of Preschool for Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, the First Southern Baptist Church in Del City, Oklahoma and at Meadowood Baptist Church in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Sharon enjoyed traveling. She loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed the birds and wildflowers. Sharon was also an accomplished writer and penned the book, When Jesus was Born, for the Southern Baptist Convention. Sharon is survived by her husband: Carl Mullen of Katy; her two sons: John M. Mullen and his wife, Tonya, of Tampa, Florida, and Michael D. Mullen and his wife, Susana, of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren: Carl S. Mullen, Kat Mullen and Kayla Mullen; brother: John Mark Massey and his wife, Cecilia, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and many other relatives and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Timothy Mullen.
