Preston Lee Sorrels, 78, of Pattison, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021, in Katy, Texas.
Preston was born October 12, 1942, in Galena Park, Texas, the son of Marvin and Marie (Stenzel) Sorrels. He grew up in the Galena Park area, graduating from Galena Park High School. Preston earned a master’s degree in education from Sam Houston University.
After college, he began teaching. Eventually, Preston was drafted and proudly served as a medic in the United States Army. Preston had always had a desire for missions and talked about helping as a missionary’s assistant in Panama. When Preston received his military assignment, he discovered he was being sent to Panama. He felt God’s hand in that. While weekdays were spent working on base, Preston was able to help the local missionaries on the weekends. Upon arriving home from his service, Preston returned to the career in which he loved, teaching.
He said that the fact that he was born on Columbus Day is probably what prompted his interest in history. Preston loved antiques and had a collection of interesting items in his home. He made many friends as he rummaged through, bought, and sold antiques. Preston had a big heart, generous nature, and a boisterous laugh.
He is survived by several cousins and special friends: Carlos Orrellana and Reverend Edward and Zelda Vaughn. Preston was preceded in death by his parents: Marvin and Marie Sorrels; and uncle.
