Nelda Sue Barrett Poteet

Sue Poteet passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on July 29, 2021, in Gainesville, TX at the age of 74.

Sue was born on August 22, 1946, in Bellville, TX.  She rode on several Saltgrass trail rides with her father “Preacher” Barrett as the trail boss.  In high school, she was a twirler and played the flute for the Bellville Brahma Band.  In 1961 her family moved to Sugar Land, TX where she became the feature twirler and drum major for the John Foster Dulles Viking Band.  On August 21, 1982, she and her husband Troy Poteet welcomed the love of her life into the world, “Katie” Jaclyn Kate Poteet.  Sue was also a wonderful mother to her beloved fur-children over the years and was affectionately known as “Momma Sue” to so many.  Sue began her career working for Shell Oil in Houston, TX, and after moving to Bellville, retired from Children’s Protective Services after 18 years as a Unit Secretary and Legal Liaison.   Loving to make beautiful Counted Cross-Stitch, she placed Grand Champion in the Austin County Fair.  Later in life, she was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan who cheered them on every game day.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, “Preacher” Marvin E Barrett, and “Tency” Beatrice B Thompson Barrett.

Sue was survived by her daughter, Katie, and her husband Tavis Johnson of Gainesville, TX; sister Jackie Barrett Brock Prewitt and her husband Doug; nephews Bradley Van Brock and his wife Shelby, and Justin Van Brock and wife Stephanie; great-nephew Braden Van Brock, and great-nieces Bethany Blair Brock and Aubree Belle Brock all of Huntsville, TX.
