Velma Hope (Gidley) Griffin, 93, of Katy, Texas, longtime Brookshire resident, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, in Katy.
Velma was born on December 16, 1925, in Belton, Texas, the daughter of James and Ruth (Stroud) Gidley. She grew up in Salado, Texas, graduating from Salado High School. Velma attended Scott and White Nursing School for a year and a half before marrying Edward Griffin on June 2, 1945, in Temple, Texas. After living in Temple where Ed worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, Ed and Velma moved to Brookshire. Ed worked on a rice farm for many years, then later became a Real Estate broker. Velma worked as a nurse’s aide for Royal ISD for many years. They were members of the First United Methodist Church. Along with her husband, Velma was active in the community and was a member of the Brookshire Chapter #652, Order of the Eastern Star. Velma enjoyed crocheting, reading, painting, sewing, sudoku, and gardening.
Velma is survived by her daughters: Sandra Floyd and husband, Mike, of Baytown, Betty Creasy of Brookshire, Brenda White and husband, Doug, of Katy, and Thedie Green, also of Katy; son: Edward Griffin, Jr. of Baytown; grandchildren: Christine Kukolja and husband, Tihomir, Steven Stallknecht, Dawn Dighton and husband, Spencer, Amanda White, Lauren Clayton and husband, Joey, Sam Green, and Emma Green; great-grandchildren:, Taylor Stallknecht, Emalie Stallknecht, Jake Carter, Hannah Carter and Matthew Kukolja. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruth Gidley, husband of 67 years, Ed Griffin, and five siblings.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Ann Coursey, who lovingly cared for Velma during the last few weeks of her life.
