VERNON LESLIE WENDT, 97, of Bellville, Texas, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2019, in Bryan, Texas.
He was born in the house he grew up in on June 9, 1922, in Bellville to his parents Adolph and Marie Seyer Wendt. Vernon grew-up and attended Bellville schools, graduating from Bellville High School in 1940. He had the honor of being the first in his family to graduate high school. Vernon enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. Bushnell, maintaining and supplying submarines during WWII. After the war, he met the love of his life, Dolores Ottmer, and they married on March 12, 1946, at St. John Lutheran Church. Early in their marriage, he was called back to naval duty serving during the Korean Conflict. He was very proud of his service to his country. Vernon and Dolores were blessed with six children.
Vernon was a confirmed member of St. John Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Bellville VFW Post and the Bellville American Legion Post. He was employed as a mechanic for the Texas Highway Department and was a famer and builder in his spare time. After retirement, Vernon loved tending to his garden and visiting Newman’s Bakery. His greatest love was being able to give his beloved great grandchildren money for their favorite ice cream.
Vernon was well-known in Bellville and will be truly missed by his many dear friends.
He is survived by his by his six children: Louise Foreman, Connie Ollero, Leslie Wendt, Cynthia Sykora and her husband, George, Roy Wendt and his wife, Shirley and Annette “Lucy” Landry and her husband, Russell; nine of his grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brother: Clarence Wendt; a treasured friend: Charles Worst; a host of nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Marie Wendt, wife, Dolores Wendt, granddaughter, Laura Wendt, son-in-law, B.C. Ollero, brothers, Kenneth “Pete” Wendt, Wilbert “Boop” Wendt, Ralph Wendt, Harold Wendt, sisters, Edith “Mousie” (Nana) Krueger and Winifred “Winnie” Himly, sisters-in-law, Evelyn Wendt, Flora Wendt, Helen Wendt and Elizabeth Wendt, brothers-in-law, Clarence Krueger and Edward Himly.
